Your tasks

About this role

As a Data Scientist on the Estimations team, you will be a developing professional focused on building skills and expertise to support the predictive engine that powers our global delivery network.

Your mission is to apply practical knowledge to build, validate, and maintain machine learning models that predict Estimated Time of Arrivals (ETAs). Specifically, you will consider how various processes such as finding a courier, drive times, and preparation times, as well as operational aspects like courier rejections and delays impact the predictions.

You will work independently with general supervision to plan your own work, while actively seeking guidance from Senior Data Scientists and engineers to solve real-time logistics challenges. You will transform stakeholder needs into actionable methodologies, ensuring our predictions are accurate and reliable.

These are some of the key components to the position:

  • Model Development & Assessment: Lead well-defined assignments to develop and maintain machine learning models (e.g., regression, classification, clustering). You will run predictive analyses and perform model assessments, validation, and enhancement activities to improve ETA accuracy.
  • Data Analysis & Engineering: Utilise SQL and Python to acquire, transform, and clean large-scale data sets. You will apply appropriate techniques to handle outliers and missing values, creating data structures relevant to logistics problems with limited guidance.
  • Production Standards: Apply basic engineering practices to your work, including writing intermediate-level source code, writing unit tests, and using version control. You will be mindful of production environment rules and assist in monitoring the predictive performance of models.
  • Process Improvement: Identify potential opportunities to automate or improve existing processes and analysis. You will recommend solutions based on established best practices to ensure our estimation systems run smoothly.
  • Actionable Insights: Translate analytics output into clear, actionable insights that support decision-making. You will assist in presenting these insights to stakeholders in easy-to-understand language, utilizing data visualization tools where appropriate.

What will you bring to the team?

  • Experience: 2 to 3 years of professional experience in Data Science or a related field.
  • Machine Learning: Familiarity with statistical and machine learning techniques (classification, regression, clustering, decision trees). You understand which requirements determine the best technique for a problem.
  • Programming: Intermediate-to-advanced proficiency in Python (e.g., pandas, scikit-learn) and SQL. You can write queries to retrieve and transform large data sets and are familiar with industry style guides.
  • Data Handling: Ability to perform data cleaning (de-duplication, standardization) and exploratory data analysis. You are familiar with data security, compliance, and quality assessment.
  • Engineering Basics: Familiarity with version control (Git), testing, and basic data pipelines.
