Introduction

The Faculty of Philology at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum invites applications for the position of a Professor W2 non-tenured (m/f/d) in Latin Philology and Transformations of Antiquity commencing 01.10.2026.
The holder of the position will represent the subject of

Latin Philology and Transformations of Antiquity

in research and teaching.

The professorship, which is initially advertised as a fixed-term position for 5 years with a career track option (= possibility of a later permanent appointment subject to a positive development), is intended to represent the field of Classical Philology with a focus on Latin Philology in its breadth in research and teaching and to dedicate itself to the study of the reception and impact of Latin literature from antiquity to the present day. A focus should be on transformations of antiquity across epochs and disciplines and their repercussions on the perception of antiquity, for which, in addition to a literary studies perspective, a cultural studies orientation and a comparative approach are expected.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is Ruhr-Universität Bochum’s declared aim.

Your tasks

The future incumbent will be expected to contribute to the further development of the interdisciplinary research priorities and interdisciplinary collaborative research of the Faculty of Philology. Close cooperation with the departments of philology, comparative literature, theatre and media studies is expected. There are also excellent opportunities for collaboration beyond faculty boundaries, for example with the Faculty of History. Collaboration in establishing the degree programme ‘Classics – Literature, Culture and Reception of Antiquity’ is also expected.

Requirements

Positive evaluation as a junior professor, habilitation or equivalent academic achievement and evidence of special aptitude are just as much required as the willingness to participate in the self-governing bodies of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum and to generally get involved in university processes according to Ruhr-Universität Bochum’s mission statement. The candidate has to meet the appointment requirements according to section 36 ff. Hochschulgesetz NRW.
We expect furthermore:

  • strong commitment in teaching - courses must be taught in German;
  • readiness to participate in interdisciplinary research;
  • willingness and proven ability to attract third-party funded research projects;
  • willingness and ability to collaborate in current research networks within the faculty and university and to develop new networks;
  • International research collaborations.
